Your kitchen might be the heart of your home but the mudroom is the brains. It’s where your family drops all their bags, coats, shoes, and mail when they get home. It’s the first spot you search for your keys and your favourite hat when you’re rushing out the door. What I’m saying is - IT NEEDS TO BE ORGANIZED.
Organization is key all over your home, but mudrooms tend to be undersized (who wants to waste valuable space on a *mudroom* when they could have a bigger kitchen?!) so every inch counts. When planning the design or renovation of your mudroom you need to keep in mind how your family lives. I’m not talking about how you dream your family lives, how you actually live. Does your teenager barge in and leave their hockey bag in a heap with their shoes and jacket in a pile on the floor? Most families don’t live in an organized bubble where everything is hung where it belongs and every pair of shoes is straightened in the closet.
Great features to keep in mind are coat hooks for the jackets worn everyday, shoe storage to tuck away todays shoes so the next person doesn’t trip, and some closed storage for the rest. Somewhere to sit down is always important - but having a big, long bench always manages to collect everything that would take an extra 5-seconds to put away. Depending on how you live other things you want to incorporate may be: a family calendar and schedule, storage for sports bags and equipment, laundry facilities, or even a pet washing station!
I’d love to hear about what storage solutions you’ve implemented in your own home or what you wish you had! Let me know in the comments below
